Film Evaluation

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A182tFzdfaQ

I am afraid i can only link instead of embed, but here is my evaluation!

Unfortunately i missed out a few parts of questions as the audio wouldn't link up with the final video so here is a transcript:

In what ways does your product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I had quite a few influences when it came to a shooting style of my film. I took inspiration from Darren Aronofsky and his up close and personal approach to filming which makes the audience feel instantly connected to the story. In ‘Black Swan’ (2011), ‘Requiem For A Dream’ (2000) and ‘Pi’ (1998) Aronofsky barely uses a static camera, it’s always the case of seeing it from the characters points of view. Another one of my influences was Catherine Hardwicke and the film ‘Thirteen’ (2003) and ‘Lords Of Dogtown’ (2005) and how in these films its about reading between the lines and focusing on characters facial expressions. Finally the great Spike Jonze’s ‘I’m Here’ helped me concentrate on the importance of narrative and ideology.

I wanted to use CCTV-like shots in the scene with Olly. This is because the theory of my film is based on a social realism view of grief, this means showing the feeling of grief in a very sincere, frank way which you don’t see in the majority of Hollywood films. I wanted to depict a broken man and the people that see this on a day-to-day basis would be likely to be CCTV films and their operators. I have learned from personal experience that many people when grieving don’t tend to exhibit their feelings freely to their peers, colleagues and loved ones. Therefore I wanted to show what people were doing when grieving when they are alone.

I used the piece of music ‘Spanish Sahara’ by Foals because it felt really powerful and so relevant to my subject. I liked the lyrics when I first heard it and the song itself sparked some of the ideas for particular shots - for example the end scene when the ‘other woman’ is in bed. I liked the idea of the ghost – Emma reaching out to grab something unachievable and how she was desperately seeking some peace throughout the film so she can move out of the limbo she has found herself in. I chose the song because it’s just as haunting and beautiful as Emma. I wanted something that would stay with the audience long after they’d finished watching. I had also seen it on some television dramas and i felt moved by it when it was accompanying a montage in Misfits (2009) and wanted to create a similar ambiance in my film.

The sequence when Olly is in the large corridor is my favorite. I really enjoyed figuring out way to execute it so it would come across right in editing and the final product. When I shot it I kept the camera static (which became quite a rare occurrence when I was filming) so I would get the fluidity of Olly’s movements and the right kind of jump when I stopped the camera and bought Emma into shot. At first I was going to have it so Olly was in exactly the same place each time Emma moved. However I became aware that these shots would not have the urgency and panic that I wanted to depict Olly having. So when it came to editing I cut up the middle of each shot and mixed them in with each other. The final effect of this decision makes it look like Olly does not know Emma is there but he can still feel her around which is exactly what I wanted to achieve.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

From audience research I have had some really positive messages concerning editing and effects. People have said that the subject, music and tense shots combined make it very powerful, moreover the argument between Emma and Olly in the car is effective for showing how close the couple have been and its something the majority of my target audience can relate to. However as constructive criticism, some have said that the story can be a bit unclear; some were unsure when Emma was alive and when Emma was dead. Moreover the jump cuts I used provided tension and from audience research they have made people slightly anxious as to what said character is trying to achieve or the message that is conveyed.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?

I think using Final Cut Pro really gave me a breakthrough with my film and made me able to execute certain things in editing that I wouldn’t of been able to do if I was to use iMovie HD. For example the use of transitions like Additive Dissolve between the crash and extreme close up of Emma's face. Also the effects I used like Prism, Stop-Motion Blur and Blink. Also the rendering system that made my audio and video more symbiotic and crisp.

I also used social networking and blogging sites like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Tumblr to put my film out to receive almost instant feedback. This was really helpful when it came to writing my review because i had had feedback to base how i would review it (even though in the end i took the complete opposite direction!)

When it came to creating my poster and film review i used Fireworks - a software i had been quite familiar with in the past. I like the professional effect if gave to my poster and film review web page, and how good my poster looks on my film review pages also!

I had used a few different medias on my blog as well like excerpts from full films i found on youtube and slide share for my narrative powerpoint.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

After I had completed my film I wanted to continue the production of my ancillary texts within the same context which i'd created my film in. I looked at everything as if it was going on the actual film world. I first did my review, i wanted to look at it from a critical perspective - hence the one star reception! I did this because indie short films like mine are not released commercially, and are mostly open to interpretation with their narrative, ideology and shot types etc. So i felt if a film like mine was given to an 'EMPIRE' film critic to review it would be 'ripped to shreds' if you will. The next thing i did was my poster, i wanted it to be somewhat explanatory to my narrative as in audience research i had some feedback about having an unclear storyline. I went with the tagline 'one lover. one friend.' because i still wanted it to be open to interpretation whom was the other woman and whom was the girlfriend in my film, but i wanted to secure the idea that it is a story about a lover scorned and the black lash of all that. I thought the concept of the other woman hugging emma from the back of her was effective as it looks as if she is about to take over her - replace her, which is exactly what i wanted to communicate emma feeling in my film.

Film Poster

I was lucky enough to catch my location on a misty day, this gives a really night creepy yet ethereal look.

I then took photos of my actors in a number of different poses, I first experimented with just Olly and Emma facing each other in loving poses to show how they were before the accident. Then i thought maybe i should get into shot as 'the other woman' to show that all the people were linked, thus making my story more clear to the audience.

I liked this shot because i felt like it looks as if the other woman is trying to take over her, or even to replace her.

I then copied the image of me, Emma and Olly onto the hill as a back ground and cut round it. I thought this was effective because the hill is a really memorable location as its where she is stuck in limbo with the memories of the past.

This is the opening scene of 'Requiem For A Dream' which completely inspired a few of the corridor scenes in my film and also inspired my titles.

This is only the trailer for the film that inspired many of my walking shots, unfortunately the film hasn't been released so I couldn't track down specific clips.

This is a trailer of the film 'Thirteen' by Catherine Hardwicke. I am completely inspired by her directing style and wanted to communicate my film in the emotive way she does with every single one of hers.

Film Review

You may think I am silly for doing a one star review for my own film but I didn't feel comfortable raving about my own creation. Therefore I envisaged myself as a very hard Empire film critic. I would like to note that I am very proud of my final product and do feel it deserves more than one star, i thought it would be different from a critical perspective rather than all the praise I have received from it!

It was a journey but I got there in the end, enjoy!

Filming Issues

I have been put at a large disadvantage I feel due to filming. This is because I have had a lot of issues getting the two of them together at once, due to them working or other lessons etcetera. I thought I would be finally able to get my filming done once and for all this week, bearing in mind I only need my actors for half an hour, you would of thought this was an easy task, however ofsted are inspecting our school when I need to be filming so I am now not allowed to film in the time allotted. I've written this post as this has been such a major issue and if the quality of my film is compromised this is highly likely to be the reason why. However like any budding filmmaker, I wish to overcome these problems as soon as I can.

Filming

This is probably one of the most compromising positions i found myself in when filming Emma's reactions in the car, i wanted to get up close and personal - reminiscent of Catherine Hardwicke.

New Ideas

I've decided that I wanted my film to have a new dimension to it. As I have said previously I wanted my film to deal with strong emotions and I felt that three of the strongest emotions one can deal with in their lifetimes in Anger, Love and most importantly Grief. I have been recently inspired by a book I have been reading called 'The LovelyBones' by Alice Sebold. A 14-year-old girl from suburban Pennsylvania is murdered by her neighbor. She tells the story from the place between Heaven and Earth, showing the lives of the people around her and how they have changed all while attempting to get someone to find her lost body.
The emotions portrayed in this novel were very raw and beautiful, they are what I want tocommunicate within my film.

How I am Engaging With Theories

Autuerism

Autuerism considers directors being the 'Author' of their films. With that said, this was the main theory that i want to connect with as i take the majority of my inspiration from Autuer directors such as Sam Mendes, Darren Aronofsky, Jan Svankmajer and Ang Lee. I also want to make my own style in my short film rather than exactly mimic things i'd seen before.

Narrative

I really wanted to engage with this theory as i have such a strong story to communicate to my audience and if done correctly - could be really moving.
Roland Barthes 'Enigma Code' ( when a puzzle is set up to engage the audience and hold interest.) is something i wish to incorporate in my film as i want the story to gently unfold and for the audience to get to know and love the characters before they go through the heavy subjects with them.
I liked Claude Levi Strauss' theory on binary oppositions. I think the characters of Emma and Olly are just this. It also coincides of the age old saying of 'opposites attract'. I think in the case of my film however, i want them to clash, expressing lots of emotion to one another is important to show how much you care, it will also express to my audience how close they are, and how hard it is for them when they know each other so well but have different views and opinions on life.
I think the use of binary oppositions is common in most films anyway - you need conflict to create a relationship with your audience and to engage them.

Genre

I didn't really agree with the concept of genre in my film. This is due the the realistic nature of it - something which you would never see in hollywood films. However - with that said- certain indie films have displayed things of this and a more crass nature. For example 'Candy' (2006, Neil Armfield) displays the miscarriage and still birth of a child a drug addicted couple have lost. The scene where Dan and Candy mourn for their child is one of the most moving things i have ever seen. You could argue that a film like Brokeback Mountain (2005, Ang Lee) even though a hollywood film, really shows grief in realistic way, especially when the character of Ennis is clutching Jacks shirt in the closet. However, who can act a film better than Heath Ledger could, eh?

Film Planning - Story

The story depicts a teenage girl. We don't know her back story but we do know (within the first few shots that is) that she is deeply upset, however we don't know the reason/s until later on.

I aim to make the film seem as if the audience is walking through a gallery of moments in her life. I intend to do this by mixing fast paced flashbacks then slower edits which differentiate her past with her present. Also i feel the tranquility of one of the locations used will help juxtapose her past with her current situation as well as its to show she is more at peace now.

The theme of this film is a social realism view on strong emotion. I feel in the majority of hollywood films I have watched, many of them don't show the real pain people go through and I feel its a very important thing to show, especially as society today is affected a lot by what they see on screen to see something real, and raw if you will, being shown in the light of day would be an interesting thing for an audience to see. Hopefully because of this reason the audience will feel a connection with some of the emotions conveyed in my film.

"It's so curious: one can resist tears and 'behave' very well in the hardest hours of grief. But then someone makes you a friendly sign behind a window, or one notices that a flower that was in bud only yesterday has suddenly blossomed, or a letter slips from a drawer... and everything collapses.". This quote by Collette is heavily related to the subject matter of my film. Grief is such a powerful thing, and the way in which people deal with it is incredible. One surpasses any idea of the strength they though they had, which is a curious and beautiful thing to me.

I rejected the idea of an linear narrative because I felt it would be better to engage my audience into the story if i gave them 'bite size' pieces. Moreover, I wanted the audience to be really moved, so I thought a sudden climax of my story would be best suited to the subjects I chose to present.
